Description
A North American tree, witch-hazel is grown for its ornamental properties of the clusters of flowers and its large and oval leaves. The yellow flowers grow in clusters, at the junction of the branches with the leaves, during winter time. It bears brown leaves made up of small capsules, which open and release the seeds.
For medicinal purposes, the bark and the leaves of witch-hazel are used. The leaves are collected during winter time, prior to becoming brown, and the bark is collected during autumn or spring. Once dry, the leaves and the bark of witch-hazel are used for the preparation of teas, powders, liquid and dry extracts and tinctures.
Use
Leaves are used under the form of extract or tincture. Witch-hazel is used for its vasoconstrictive, firming and vein flow regulating properties.
It is indicated in varicose veins, phlebitis, thrombophlebitis, hemorrhoids, sensation of „heavy legs” etc.
The anti-inflammatory and venotonic active ingredients are the tannins and flavonoids.
